A powerful tool to regrow natural hair is literally in your blood! Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, has been used for years to accelerate healing after injury or surgery. At La Jolla Cosmetic Medical Spa, we can use PRP to stimulate healthy hair follicles and help patients enjoy fuller hair growth without surgery or downtime.
What is platelet-rich plasma?
Platelet-rich plasma is a special preparation of blood that contains only plasma with a super high concentration of platelets: blood cells that play a starring role in healing throughout the body (red and white blood cells are separated out). Platelets deliver special molecules called “growth factors” to help cells rebuild and repair themselves. Plasma, the liquid component of blood, also contains growth factors and nutrients that benefit cell repair.
We can harness this healing power to help hair follicles grow optimally by injecting platelet-rich plasma into areas of thinning hair on the scalp.
How can PRP help my hair grow?
PRP helps individual hair follicles stay in the growth phase for longer periods of time.
Hair loss affects both men and women as we age. The natural hair growth cycle can slow down, leaving fewer hair follicles in the growth phase at any given time. This can result in thinning areas of hair. PRP injections deliver a “superdose” of growth platelets to the hair follicles, which extends the hair growth cycle. This essentially shifts the hair growth-to-loss balance in favor of hair growth, so your hair gradually becomes thicker and fuller.
What are the benefits of PRP as a hair loss treatment?
- PRP injections are quick and non-surgical. Each appointment takes about 30 minutes on average.
- A zero-downtime hair loss treatment. Patients can return to normal activities immediately. A topical numbing agent will keep you comfortable. We also offer PRO-NOX™ nitrous oxide as an add-on option for those with anxiety around needles.
- No outward signs of treatment. You do not have to shave your head to prepare for PRP injections.
- Safe, all-natural treatment. Because your own blood is used, there is no risk for allergic reaction, and the risk of side effects is close to zero when performed by a qualified medical provider.
